THE FOUNDING FOUR

Bill Ryan
Bill was a local doctor and founding member of the SRFC who served as the first President of the club from 1968 to 1971. Bill was a great supporter of the club throughout his life and could be seen at events and games enjoying the social rugby scene.

John Phelps
John Phelps was one of the founding members of the club and served as secretary from 1969 to 1977. Known widely by his middle name "Rivers". John was a great advocate for the club and undertook the publicity role with vigour, with live crosses to games on local radio station 2ST and through his regular column in the local newspaper "Around the Rugby Rucks" with Slaggie. He also served on the Illawarra District Rugby Union Committee and was a manager of Illawarra and NSW Country at different stages.

Foster Emery
Foster was a well known identity in the Shoalhaven district, being a exceptional sportsman in his younger years. Foster served as President of the SRFC from 1980 to 1986, during the years when the club grew significantly and moved from its Lyrebird Park home to Shoalhaven Rugby Park in 1982. Foster was always first to congratulate the players after the game with a "well done son" whether the team won, lost or drew the game.

Tim Johnston
Tim Johnston was another founding member of the Shoals who was a prominant player in the clubs early years. "Slipper" as he was affectionately known, was the clubs first Secretary in 1968, then served as President from 1972 to 1976. Tim was a great advocate for the club, undertaking a lot of work in the background to ensure the growth and sustainability of the SRFC.
